  Program of Study

The objective of the information technology program leading to the Master of Science degree is to provide advanced skills and knowledge in the planning, design, implementation, testing, and management of applications of computing and communication technologies for business, industry, government, and other organizations.
The primary areas of interest are: information security and privacy, information integration, software engineering, information environment and pervasive computing applications, and knowledge management.
   
   
  Admission Requirements for MS IT

In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School, the program requires applicants to have completed undergraduate course work, or equivalent, in an object-oriented programming language (e.g. C++ or Java) and in data structures with a minimum grade average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Students must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.8 (on a 4.0 point scale) and a junior/senior GPA of at least 3.0.

A satisfactory score on the aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination or Graduate Management Admission Test is required.

Students with special backgrounds who do not meet all of the above requirements may be granted conditional admission.


Documents to be Submitted for Admission

Documents to be submitted include the following:

1. Transcript showing a baccalaureate degree.
2. A satisfactory score on the aptitude portion of the GRE or GMAT.
3. A written description of any relevant and significant work experience.
4. Three letters of reference.
5. (If the applicant's native language is not English), must satisfy UNC Charlotte TOFEL requirements for international students.


Degree Requirements

The total number of hours required is 30:

  • 18 hours of required courses
  • 9 hours in an approved concentration
  • 3 hours fulfilled by either an approved IT project or one additional elective course.

The required courses include: 

  • MBAD 6121 Business Information Systems (Note: Students admitted to the MSIT program do not need to take INFO 3200, please talk to department secretary for registration )
  • One of ITIS 5166 Network-based application development or MBAD 6125 Business Data Communications
  • One of ITIS 6112 Software System Design and Implementation or MBAD 6202 Business Information Systems Development
  • ITIS 5160 Applied Databases (please note that ITIS 6160 can be a substitute for ITIS 5160)
  • ITIS 6342 Project Management
  • ITIS 6177 Systems Integration
Important prerequisite considerations for required courses
  • MBAD 6202 requires MBAD 6121 as a prerequisite.
  • ITIS 6177 requires ITIS 5166 and ITIS 5160 as prerequisites.

Each student must complete a three-course (nine credit hours) sequence in an approved concentration area.  Other concentration areas are possible with the approval of the MSIT Program Coordinator.  In addition, the MSIT Program Coordinator can approve substitution of courses within approved concentrations.  Details on concentration requirements are available on the department website and at the department office.

Note:  Students who have completed the undergraduate version of a dual undergraduate/graduate course (i.e., ITIS 4250/5250) may not take the graduate version for credit.

Current concentrations include:

Information Security and Privacy
This concentration focuses on information confidentiality, integrity, availability. It provides a wide section of courses that focuses on technical as well as policy issues related to these areas.
Students will take ITIS 6200 Principles of Information Security and Privacy and two of the following courses:
  • ITIS 5250 Computer Forensics (3G)
  • ITIS 6210 Access Control and Security Architecture (3G)
  • ITIS 6220 Information and System Assurance (3G)
  • ITIS 6230 Information Infrastructure Protection (3G)
  • ITIS 6240 Applied Cryptography (3G)
  • ITIS 6362 Information Technology: Ethics, Policy and Security (3G)
  • ITIS 6167 Information and Network Security (3G)
  • ITIS 6140 Software Testing and Quality Assurance (3G)
Information Technology Management
This concentration focuses on IT management and the use of IT in enterprises.
Students must take
  • ITIS 6200 Principles of Information Security and Privacy

Two of the following courses:

  • ITIS 6362 Information Technology: Ethics, Policy, and Security
  • ITIS 6164 Online Info System Design
  • GEOG 6615 Advanced Seminar in Spatial Decision Support Systems
  • INFO 6352 Electronic Commerce
  • MBAD 6122 Technology-Enhanced Decision Making
Software Design and Engineering
The purpose of this concentration is to provide graduate students with the opportunity to develop skills for the design and development of large-scale software applications.
Students take three courses from the following list in addition to taking ITIS 6112 as part of the required core:
  • ITIS 6148 Advanced OO Design and Implementation
  • ITIS 6164 Online Info System Design
  • ITIS 6200 Principles of Information Security and Privacy
  • ITIS 6130 Software Requirements Engineering for Information Systems
  • ITIS 6140 Software Testing and Quality Assurance
Advanced Databases and Knowledge Discovery
The purpose of this concentration is to provide graduate students with the opportunity to reach a demonstrated level of competence in the area of databases and knowledge discovery. The students will be introduced to the theory, techniques and applications of modern data bases and data analysis.
Students will take three courses from the following list (note that ITIS 5160 can substitute ITCS 6160 as prerequisites to ITCS 6162 and ITCS 6163):
  • ITCS 6162 Knowledge Discovery in Databases
  • ITCS 6163 Data Warehousing
  • ITIS 6164 Online Info System Design
  • ITIS 6200 Principles of Information Security and Privacy
Management
(Important: See note below) This concentration focuses on the management issues associated with the development and application of emerging technologies. The courses in the option address strategic decision factors, communications, technology entrepreneurship, and individual and group behavior dynamics.
Students will choose three of the following courses:
  • MBAD 6161 Organizational Leadership & Behavior 
  • MBAD 6162 Organizational Leadership & Behavior   II
  • MBAD 6163 Human Resource Management
  • MBAD 6164 Executive Communication 
  • MBAD 6192 Business and Society

Marketing
(Important: See note below) This concentration focuses on the marketing issues associated with electronic commerce. The courses in the option address e-commerce from a technology base as well as a marketing perspective. It focuses on integrating information technology with marketing analysis, strategies, and issues important in becoming competitive in today's new wired global marketplace.
Students will choose from the following courses:
  • INFO 6352 Electronic Commerce 
  • MBAD 6171 Marketing Management 
  • MKTG 6010 Internet Marketing or MKTG 6020 Information Technology in Marketing 
Financial Services Concentration
(Important: See note below) This concentration focuses on applications in the financial services industry that are heavily dependent on information technology. The courses address a wide range of applications in commercial banking, investment banking, corporate finance, derivatives, portfolio management, and risk management.
Students will take three of the following courses:
  • MBAD 6151 Financial Institutions & Markets 
  • MBAD 6156 Commercial Bank Management 
  • MBAD 6157 Theory of Corporate Finance 
  • MBAD 6153 Investment Management 
  • MBAD 6058 Special Topics in Financial Services 
NOTE: This concentration is not an option for any student beginning in the Spring semester of 2006 or thereafter.
