Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Science Department
Q. Do I have to make an advising appointment to meet with my Academic Advisor every semester?
A. Yes. All Computer Science majors have an advising flag set every semester and you must see an advisor to have this flag removed. You cannot register until this flag is removed.
Q. How do I identify my Academic Advisor?
A. Go to the University’s Advising webpage (www.advising.uncc.edu). On the left hand side of the screen, click on “My Advisor” and scroll down to “Finding My Advisor.”
Q. How do I make an appointment with my Academic Advisor?
A. The Computer Science (CS) Department starts formal advising one week prior to the first day that students can register for the following semester. About a week before this formal advising period begins, each CS Advisor will post near his/her office door a sign-up sheet. Each advisee is responsible for checking this sign-up sheet and selecting a time to meet with his/her advisor.
Q. What if my class schedule conflicts with all the times that my Academic Advisor has posted?
A. Contact your Academic Advisor by phone or email and see if you can arrange another time to meet.
Q. What if, after repeated attempts, I am unable to setup an appointment to meet with my Academic Advisor during any of his/her available times?
A. If you uncover such scheduling conflicts early, consider coming to Night Advising (see below). If Night Advising is not an option, come by the Computer Science Office (Woodward 421-A) and ask the staff if you can meet with another (alternate) advisor. If such an advisor is available, he/she may see you then or setup an appointment to meet with you later.
Q. What is the best way to prepared for my advising session with my Academic Advisor?
A. Review your Degree Requirements and prepare a list of courses that you wish to take next semester [i.e. trial schedule] that you can present to your Academic Advisor for discussion.
Q. How do I determine which Degree Requirements apply to me?
A. The specific Degree Requirements that you must satisfy to graduate is determined by the specific date when you became a Computer Science (CS) major. This date is either: the first day of freshman classes if you were admitted as a freshman CS major; or, the first day that you began taking classes at UNC-Charlotte if you are a transfer student who was admitted as a CS major at the time of transfer; or, the date that you declared a change of major and signed the appropriate documents. Each student is given a copy of their specific Degree Requirements at the time they become a Computer Science major. If you are unable to locate your copy, come by the Computer Science Office (Woodward 421-A) and ask a staff member for a copy. A copy of your Degree Requirements is always kept in the back of your student folder. If necessary, the CS staff can pull your folder and make a copy for you.
Q. Does the Computer Science Department offer Night Advising?
A. Yes. The week before registration begins; Night Advising is available Monday through Thursday from 5pm until 7pm. This is primarily for student who work during the day and have difficulty coming to campus except in the evenings. However, it is open to all students. An appointment schedule is posted outside Woodward 409. To take advantage of this you must sign-up 24-hours before your selected advising time. This is to ensure that your records are available for the night advisors.
