Dr. Allen, Professor of Computer Science in the College of Computing and Informatics has taught at UNC Charlotte for 32 years. He received his Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo and joined SUNY at Buffalo as an Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. In 1974 he joined UNC Charlotte in the College of Engineering as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and transferred to the Department of Computer Science when it was formed in 1984. In 1985 he took a leave of absence to begin a successful company, DataSpan Inc., of which he was the President and CEO. He returned to UNC Charlotte in 1987 and has contributed to the department's development with many published papers and research grants. In 2004, he was appointed Associate Chair of the Computer Science Department. Throughout his career, Dr. Allen has consistently been rated, by graduating seniors in the Computer Science Department, as "the professor who had the most significant positive impact on their education at UNC Charlotte".
