Overview
CCI operates (5) 50” Plasma
monitors in the hallways of the Woodward Hall building. This document is
intended to provide background information for those interested in the details
of this technology and contact information if you wish to use this technology.
The plasma monitors are controlled by 4 computers, and in general,
anything you do on those computers can be displayed and heard on the plasma
monitors. The computers are located in
Woodward room 139 and controlled through a remote, VNC program so that when
changes are necessary, they may be implemented without physically visiting the
computers.
The display screens are
Samsung Plasma Displays, capable of a 1366 x 768 resolution and currently
displaying in 1024 x 768. Click Here for a
PDF file of their user’s manual and full specifications, including chipset
diagrams.

- Dell
Precision 380 – All four
computers in the cabinet are exactly alike.
- ATI
Radeon X1900 Series All-In-Wonder® Video Card – Each Precision 380 has had one of these cards
installed to allow for TV reception and playback from the cable
receiver. They allow for a wide
range of functions such as transparent windows, setting the input image as
the wallpaper for the desktop, and scheduling for viewing time.
- UPS – Everything in the cabinet is connected to a
power backup system for protection in the event of a power outage.

- NTI
“Black Box” networking device –
Each computer has its video and audio output sent to one of these devices
which transmits all such signals over CAT5 networking cable to the
companion black box located at each plasma display, where it is then sent
to the display through a VGA cable.

- Video
Splitter (Top) – This small box
takes the single input from the cable receiver and turns it into four
separate outputs for use by the individual computers. All computers will display the same
channel at the same time, which must be changed from the cable receiver itself.
